The Characters

The characters in Advent 9 are the highlight of the book!

Advent 9

The protagonist, Advent Nine, is skillfully written and well-fleshed out. He’s a complex character who is both relatable and intriguing. Even though he doesn’t know his own backstory and struggles with aspects of his identity, his journey is an enthralling one. As readers, we get to join him in this fascinating exploration of self-discovery.

Dr. Antiworld

Dr. Felix Antiworld, the villain, starts off as your typical mustache-twirling supervillain. However, as the story progresses, you begin to understand him better. While he remains far from a saint, there’s a gradual transformation that leaves you questioning his morality and motivations.

Jude/Trancedragon

Jude/Trancedragon is an otherworldly being with powers comparable to Advent Nine’s, but his intentions are far darker. Although not as fleshed out as I would have liked, he still adds a layer of intrigue to the narrative.

The Plot

The plot of Advent 9 is intricate, with multiple threads and subplots woven together.

Some readers might find it slightly overwhelming, but I personally appreciated the complexity.

However, it did feel like some subplots could have been trimmed down to maintain a more even pace throughout the book.

Pros

  • Well-developed characters with engaging perspectives.
  • The inclusion of artwork throughout the book adds an extra dimension to the story and enhances the visual experience for readers.
  • Satisfying and complete resolution of the main plot, leaving room for further exploration in the sequel.
  • The unique and refreshing portrayal of neurodivergence in the protagonist.

Cons

  • The pacing could have been more balanced, with some slower moments taking too long to develop.
  • Certain subplots left unanswered questions, which could be addressed in future installments.
  • Lacking female representation. The one female character is a throwaway character only there to move the male plot forward.

Controversy Surrounding the Representation

Advent 9 is an autistic character, explicitly stated in the book. Some readers have criticized the representation, claiming it’s not authentic and lacks accurate portrayal. However, upon speaking with the author, who identifies as neurodivergent, I gained a deeper understanding of the character’s portrayal. The author’s lived experiences and perspective shaped the representation of Advent 9, and I found this to be a compelling aspect of the book.
